Effect of negative permeabilities on three-dimensional guided waves in magnetoelastic multilayered plates

Existing researches on the guided waves in magnetoelastic multilayered plates mainly concern the in-plane P-SV or out-of-plane SH waves with considering only positive permeabilities of the constituent piezomagnetic layers. This paper firstly studies the coupled three-dimensional guided waves in magnetoelastic multilayered plates with left-handed constituent layers, i.e. part or all of permeabilities of the piezomagnetic layers are negative. In order to analyze the guided waves at both low and high frequency ranges, the method of reverberation-ray matrix (MRRM) based on the state space formalism is introduced for general magnetoelastic multilayered plates consisting of arbitrary number of layers of piezomagnetic and elastic materials, since it is unconditionally numerically stable. Novel dispersions of guided waves in magnetoelastic multilayered plates with left-handed piezomagnetic layers can be discerned by contrasting their dispersion curves with the counterpart curves as all permeabilities are positive. The findings in this paper can be used to direct the design of innovative wave devices by introducing left-handed piezomagnetic materials.
