Instrumentation of low velocity impact facility

Our solar system can be mainly defined as a system of objects orbiting around Sun. Among these are mainly Planets and their moon after them we have asteroid and Kuiper belt other than them there are objects with elliptical orbits with high eccentricity or not bound to Sun at all. These objects are smaller in size and comets come into this class. Its eventually these objects are the one which impact the bigger bodies and leave their signature as crater and shape their surface in the long run. The Micrometeoroid are too small but thanks to their high kinetic energy their impact has adverse effects on Planets and Spacecrafts. To simulate these impacts a frugal laboratory set-up has been made. The light gas gun is an instrument used for the performing physical experiment and it is a highly specialized gun designed to generate high velocity. In the existing light gas gun, gun powder is used to power the piston, the Light gas gun which is going to be installed, uses oxy-hydrogen generator which in-turn uses water and electricity to power the piston, which solves problem of storing gun powder and hence removes inhibition to number of times fired. This system uses Laser to measure the velocity of projectile. Advantage of using Light gas gun is that we can use the projectile of different shape, size and type to study its impact on the target.
