A data model for biopart datasheets

The Synthetic Biology Information System (SynBIS) developed at the Imperial College Centre for Synthetic Biology and Innovation (CSynBI) is using the data model here introduced is data model to disseminate the data obtained from our automatised characterisation pipeline. A very important feature of the data model that will be enhanced in the next version is the specification of protocols. As part of our current API, we provide a static view of the main properties of the experimental protocol. However, it is clear that the data currently returned to SynBIS are not comprehensive enough to reproduce a characterization experiment without extra information (we currently provide via a link to a human-readable text document). Our objective for the next version is, therefore, to upgrade to a more comprehensive description of a protocol to enable full reproducibility. With a similar motivation, we are also building on this work to develop a standard specification for analysis protocols. This will facilitate the input of standard experimental data (e.g. encoded as DICOM-SB), together with a standard description of the experimental protocol, to output a unique version of a datasheet - with full reproducibility and platform independence. The CSynBI is also working with other institutions aiming to better understand the data they produce, enhance the present model accordingly (and potentially produce new official DICOM-SB and SBOL extensions) and automate the incorporation of the data they produce into SynBIS.
