Measurement of aircraft wing deformation using fiber Bragg gratings

A feasible method of measuring the aircraft wing deformation based on fiber Bragg grating (FBG) is introduced. The strains of the wing can be obtained by means of FBGs attached on the surface of the model airfoil. A finite element model (FEM) is established to obtain the numerical analysis results of strain and deformation of the wing. The experimental deformation of the airfoil can be deduced by analyzing these data through a specific derivation procedure without a mechanical analytic formula. A good agreement can be achieved from the experimental results and direct measurement.
