Building automation by an intelligent embedded infrastructure: Combining medical, smart energy, smart environment and heating

This paper describes an embedded platform for multiple and cross domain applications in intelligent buildings. The platform is called BASIS: Building Automation by a Scalable and Intelligent System. It is a distributed embedded system with a large number of nodes as part of the building. This integrated low-power system is based on dependable long-living hardware and system software. Software isolation for applications is provided. It is designed to fulfill the existing and upcoming needs in buildings, especially in residential homes. The platform is the infrastructural carrier for up to 18 application domains that have been identified by now. The most important are Ambient Assisted Living, electrical energy management and heating optimization for energy saving. The applications are protected against each other by the system software nevertheless enabling synergetic interaction of the applications.
