Advanced traveler information system using COCOMO and ECOMO

In the earlier work [1]-[2], an Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) was designed using cellular network, GPS probes and limited ITS infrastructure for real time vehicular speed estimation. The speed estimations have a certain amount of error and the estimation may not be available at all the times and locations. This paper assesses the utility of such traffic information in an Advanced Traveler Information System (ATIS). The ATIS uses real time traffic information to suggest optimal trip and enroute changes to the commuters. The effect of ATIS penetration on the average trip duration and congestion distribution in a road network is evaluated using a series of simulations. The results show significant improvement in the traffic condition with the increase in ATIS penetration. The effect of unavailability of real time traffic information at certain times and locations on the quality of computed trip plans is analyzed. The simulation results show that the ATIS improves trip duration and congestion in the road network, and the results are comparable to the case when the real time traffic information is available at all the times and locations.
