A new architecture for fabrication of on-chip arrays of nanoscale light sources in the UV-visible

We present a novel platform for in-situ formation and integration of semiconductor nanocrystals for realization of on-chip arrays of light sources. The current state-of the-art methodologies rely on the traditional microfabrication and thin film semiconductor growth which have their own limitations including limited control over atomic scale defects and footprint of the optically active layers. The platform we are developing allows formation of structures with sub-100 nm dimensions and prevents the extension of lattice defects to the overgrown active layers of the nanoscale optical sources. We present some initial results on structure, fabrication, operation, and the wavelength of the emitting light and the possibility of coupling the light with on-chip waveguides and cavities. We also discuss some of the capabilities of this platform such as controlling the optical axis, its scalability and wavelength tunability across the UV and visible ranges.
