A practical topology control method for smartphone based ad hoc networks experiment

Ad hoc social networks (ASNETs) are emerging as an important communication platform for mobile users. As a special kind of ASNETs, the construction of smartphone Ad hoc network has been extensively investigated. For smartphone Ad hoc network, development of various experimental network scenarios is essential for technical study. However, constructing a desired multi-hop topology of smartphone Ad hoc network is difficult considering the special features of wireless communication. In this paper, we propose a practical topology control method based on iptables for smartphone. Different from previous methods, smartphones in our approach can automatically implement topology construction and update based control messages without manual configuration. Control messages are generated by a control center based the developers desired topology relationship. Besides that, we develop an experimental prototype and design experiments to demonstrate its effectiveness. Experiment results show that our work can efficiently reduce experiment complexity and improve reliability.
