Reactively-loaded EBG-based transmission lines and application to power splitters

In this paper, artificial transmission lines based on electromagnetic bandgaps (EBGs) consisting of periodic reactive loads are analyzed. Two types of artificial lines are considered: lines based on capacitive loading, and lines based on inductive loading. In both cases, two important implications related to the periodic reactive loading arise: (i) size reduction, due to the slow-wave effect derived from the presence of the shunt connected capacitances or series connected inductances, and (ii) stop-band behavior, due to the Bragg effect, derived from periodicity. The equations useful for design purposes are presented in both cases, and an example of application, i.e., a compact power splitter, is reported. These artificial lines are of special interest in applications where size reduction and filtering (e.g., for spurious suppression) are a due.
