Sensor controls see the light

Light-based signal-processing and control mechanisms open up new capabilities for next-generation phased-array sensors. The focus of this article is on some of the recently developed optical control techniques for sensors, with the underlying active control technology being large area, multipixel, thin-film, liquid-crystal (LC) devices used as polarization-sensitive elements.
