The computational challenge of linkage analysis: what causes diseases?

Finding the genetic causes of disease is a challenging problem for biologists and mathematicians alike. This article describes the difficulties of the problem, two general algorithmic approaches to solving it, and areas of current research where the problem has not yet been adequately solved.
