Analytical estimation of radar cross section of infinitely long conducting cylinder coated with dielectric material

When a wave strikes the object, the electric charge within the object induces current that results in scattered field. The main focus of RCS estimation is towards RCS reduction, i.e. low observability. The radar absorbing material (RAM) coating is one of the passive methods for reducing radar signatures. EM design and analysis of such coating is critical, and needs careful selection of its constitutive parameters. Further RCS studies of planar structures are relatively simple to handle. However, this is not true for curved surfaces like cylinder, ellipsoids, cones etc and their combinations, constituting a general aerospace structure. In this paper, the main focus is on the scattering from a dielectric coated conducting cylindrical body, for both principal transverse electric and transverse magnetic polarizations (TE/TM) and the circular polarization. The scattered field of coated conducting cylinder is computed for one or more layers of coating with different material specification. The addition theorem is used to calculate the field inside and outside of the cylinder, in terms of Bessel and Hankel functions and unknown scattering coefficients. These unknowns are obtained by applying appropriate boundary conditions.
