Resiliency testing of overhead distribution components and systems

Distribution components were tested in a laboratory to quantify forces generated under dynamic loading, such as tree impacts. Utility pole strength was measured using typical construction scenarios. The holding strength of various conductor ties/clamps were also measured. The collected data is analyzed and methods of mitigating pole breaks during storms is presented. The data shows how mechanical coordination of pole-top assemblies to prevent pole damage can be accomplished by using conductor ties with less holding strength or by upgrading pole class.
