A case study of small hydropower station based on pump as turbine and doubly fed induction generator

This paper presents a study of small hydropower station integration in a drinking water infrastructure, located in an urban site in Tunis, Tunisia. The proposed hydropower station is based on a pump as turbine coupled to a double fed induction generator connected to the grid and destined to supply power to the local administrative building. The main idea is to demonstrate the interest and the feasibility of the considered system. So, to make a decision on the total evaluation of the project, a technical analysis and a economical one are performed separately, then the results are combined. To model the complete system, a mathematical model of the pump is used. The control of the system intended to satisfy the specific load profile, by supplying active and reactive demand power and then increasing power quality of the grid in this site. If there is no loads demand the total power is injected into the grid.
