A space-frame-tower concept for small, self-erecting, wind turbines

The author describes a space-frame-tower concept that is particularly suitable for small wind turbines and that eliminates the need for a crane to raise or lower the turbine assembly during erection or dismantling, respectively. The self-erecting or dismantling feature is based on incorporating in the tower structure an inclined plane, upon which the turbine assembly can slide. The most elementary version of the inclined-plane-tower concept leads to towers that are inherently wide at ground level. A modified version of the inclined-plane tower has been conceived and is also described. It is concluded that the inclined-plane tower concept offers a number of advantages over and is a viable alternative to a hinged, swing-up, or gin-pole tower. It is further concluded that inclined-plane towers appear to be particularly attractive when small wind turbines are installed in remote locations where crane-hire costs are likely to be high.<
