STEM — A tool for teaching and learning a foreign language

World languages in the United States are taught according to ACTFL standards. These standards are coded in performance based benchmarks and proficiency guidelines that set the learning goals and assessment standards for learner's progress at different levels of language learning and acquisition. The content and focus of learning is organized in thematic units highly contextualized in the culture of the people who are native speaker of the language. Although focus of language learning is not on the content, language learning experience for learners may be made more effective and interesting by making connections to other disciplines that interests learners or content that learners can relate content to real world experience. This paper addresses inclusion of STEM themes as a context for foreign language learning.
