Optical and magneto-optical characterization of evaporated Co/Pt multilayers and alloys

Co/Pt multilayers are attractive future magneto-optic (MO) recording materials at short wavelengths below 500 nm. The understanding of magneto-optic effects, especially its electronic origin, requires the determination of all (diagonal and off diagonal) elements of the conductivity tensor o as function of the photon energy. Although magneto-optical spectra of Co/Pt multilayers and alloys have been published, a systematic magneto-optical and optical characterization of the Co-Pt system, both with respect to the Co/Pt thickness ratio in multilayers and the Pt content in alloys, is still missing.
