A Novel Technique For The Numerical Simulation Of Collision Free Plasmas Vlasov Hybrid Simulation

A novel technique for the numerical simulation of collision free plasmas will be presented. The method is called Vlasov Hybrid Simulation (VHS). The basics are as follows. Ann dimensional phase space simulation box is defined, which may be a function of time as the simulation progresses. A fixed phase space grid is established, with elementary phase space volume Δ At t=0 simulation particles evenly fill the phase box with a density which must be ⪞ 4.8/2**n per elementary volume. After particle push simulation particles leaving the phase box are DISCARDED and NEW simulation particles are continuously introduced at the phase box boundary. The total number of particles is DYNAMIC and fluctuates within narrow limits. From Liouvilles theorem simulation particles do not bunch in phase space, and thus all phase space grid points always have at least one simulation particle within immediately adjacent phase hypercubes. The value of distribution function F for each simulation particle embedded in the Vlasov phase fluid is constant and thus known. At each timestep values of Fare LINEARLY INTERPOLATED from the simulation particles onto the fixed phase space grid. In some problems it is more convenient to define DF or DW for each simulation particle. Once F, DF or DW are defined on the phase grid the J/ field may be computed and the field time advanced.
