Theory And Design Of Harmonic Phase-locked Gyroklystron Oscillator with Frequency Multiplication

Gyrotrons can operate at harmonics of the electron cyclotron frequency with high power output (200 kW). Phase control and frequency multiplication are possible. Such devices combine the high efficiency of oscillators with phase control and bandwidth normally associated with amplifiers. Energy transfer to the wave relies on the combination of synchronous and resonant interaction between the electrons of MIG produced beam and the rf field of high order cyclotron space harmonics along the electron trajectory. Phase control and frequency multiplication are achieved through a klystron-like mechanism. Due to a unique design of the cavities and the beam guiding center position, the device offers high efficiency operation and freedom from mode competition. The required magnetic field is compatible with modern permanent magnet technology for frequency up to 100 GHz.
