Does the moran process hinder our understanding of cooperation in human populations?

Iterated Prisoner's Dilemma games in lattices or regular networks provide a natural framework for studying cooperation in finite populations. The Moran process, coupled with frequency dependent fitness, is widely used to model the evolutionary population dynamics. However, over the past decade there seems to be little progress made in understanding the proliferation of cooperation in human populations. In this paper we will show Moran updating cannot accurately mimic evolutionary dynamics in human populations and its continued use in mathematical models-particularly in spatial games-is unlikely to provide any new insights about human cooperation.
