Comparison of Theoretical and Numerical Electromagnetic Modeling for HTS Synchronous Generator

In this paper, a detailed comparison of theoretical and numerical modeling methods of large-scale high-temperature superconducting (HTS) synchronous generator is carried out. The Maxwell's equations are employed to obtain the theoretical magnetic model of the generator. In addition, the finite-element method has been considered to achieve an accurate model of the machine. The results are validated for a 10-MW-class wind turbine HTS synchronous generator. It can be concluded that, although the theoretical equations can approximately explain the electromagnetic behavior of the HTS generator, more precise calculation will be obtained from numerical analysis.
