University NSERC research and technology transfer-the DALSA corporation case

The author starts with the university NSERC research he carried out in the 1970s and 1980s in the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department of the University of Waterloo. The NSERC and industrially funded research encompassed both fundamental and applied contributions in the field of semiconductor devices and integrated circuits. The author then describes the process by which he created the DALSA company, the process by which funding was achieved in November 1984, and the capitalization of this company at its early difficult stages of development. How the company went through the entrepreneurial, experimental and formative stages are also described. He deals with the process by which he transferred the technology from the publications and his own knowledge to the young company so that it proliferated and was used for application specific projects and later on for products. He also includes the history of DALSA. Finally, he deals with the present research and development efforts and the international leadership which the company commands in CCD image sensor and electronic cameras technology.
