An empirical study of the influence factors of college students' English course target demands

In this paper, we empirically analyzed causalities of the diversity and customization of target demands for English courses of non-English-major students and the influencing factors of different requirements for English content. We collected the raw data by questionnaire and interviews, and conducted empirical study to find the patterns. Our main conclusions are as follows. First, the college students have a relatively high requirement for the time length of English learning. Second, the courses which intend to improve speaking and listening and practical English courses are in high demand. Third, students with relatively better English skill prefer practical English courses and western culture courses, while their demands for skill improving courses and exam-oriented course are rather limited. Fourth, there are significant strong correlation between the motivations of students and their demands for different English courses. Fifth, the majors of students have some effects on their requirements for different contents of English courses.
