CPW-Fed Dualband Patch Antenna for Mobile Applications

A coplanar wave guide (CPW) fed patch antenna is presented for dual band operation. The proposed antenna consists of rectangular patch with vertical strips at both side of the patch and ground plane. 50O CPW transmission line of width 4.08mm is used to excite the patch. Symmetrical ground planes with slot are placed at both sides of the feeding line. The radiating patch, fed line and ground plane are printed on top side of the FR-4 substrate. The thickness and dielectric constant of FR-4 substrate is 1.6mm and 4.4 respectively. The proposed antenna has compact structure with dimension of 38X50mm2. The proposed antenna generates two frequency bands one is 1.65-2.08GHz and other is 3.29-3.60GHz with impedance bandwidth of 430MHz and 310MHz respectively. The first frequency band is enough to cover the digital communication system (DCS), digital enhance cordless telecommunication system (DECT), personal communication system (PCS), and personal handy-phone system (PHS) frequency bands. The second frequency band is suitable for worldwide interoperability for microwave access (WiMAX) band. The proposed antenna generates same frequency bands with improved gain when a rectangular ring slot is inserted at the centre of the patch. The proposed antenna design structure and simulation results are obtained on electromagnetic simulation (EM) software.
