The modelling of relativistic magnetrons

This paper concerns a family of relativistic magnetrons with rising-sun SWS developed by Physics International (PI). The family (with the exception of one dimension of one magnetron) is geometrically self-similar. The representative member has five-fold geometric symmetry, with energy being extracted via waveguides centred on two non-adjacent shaped cavities. Unfortunately, the PI magnetron performance is limited in total output by the "pulse-shortening" effect. Moreover at some parameters, performance is also apparently degraded by mode competition. By using numerical simulation we have been able to understand much of this behaviour and thus how to remove some or all of the performance limitations.
