Standards for robust second generation LAN management

The FDDI (fiber distributed data interface) standard currently being developed under the auspices of the ANSI X3T9.5 Accredited Standards Committee is considered. Management services and protocols (station management or SMT) specified directly in the FDDI standard will ensure that each local area network (LAN) attachment supplies an integral component of the foundation needed for robust second-generation LAN management. The evolution of computing and the user application environment are discussed, and first- and second-generation LANs are described. The management of multivendor LANs is addressed in regard to the FDDI standard.<
