Automotive electronics: Betting on the future: Dramatic experiments may help improve the already bright outlook for the Japanese automotive industry

Like their colleagues in other countries, Japanese automobile manufacturers have been making steady strides in the introduction of electronics to the automobile. Such devices and/or systems as electronic ignition, fuel injection, windshield-wiper control, and climate control are available either as standard or optional equipment on Japanese automobiles. In addition, because the country's exhaust-emission standards are the toughest in the world, the Japanese have focused considerable research and development on emission control.
