Intersymbol-Interference Design for Maximum Information Rates with 1-Bit Quantization and Oversampling at the Receiver

As the major bottleneck in Multigigabit/s communications is the analog-to-digital conversion, its resolution is constrained to not more than a few bits. In this paper we want to discuss the extreme case, which allows just 1-bit quantization. To enable spectral efficient modulation schemes the alternative receiver architecture is based on an oversampling of the received signal. Unlike the existing investigations in the recent domain this work studies the utilization of intersymbol-interference and especially its optimization. While former studies are limited to symbol-wise detection, here also information rates for sequence estimation are taken into account. In the example with a 16- QAM modulation scheme, it is shown that the utilization of the intersymbol-interference can provide up to twice as much information rate as without intersymbol-interference.
