Whatever happened to superconducting generators?

Superconducting electric power generators are potentially 50 percent smaller, and 1 percent more efficient than other types of generators with the same power output. The 1 percent improvement in efficiency would result in large dollar savings in power generation for utilities over the service life of a superconducting generator.
