So many new “windows on the brain” have emerged in the last decade that surely, by now, its workings should be well illuminated. Computer-generated images of the brain fill the pages of magazines and medical journals, displaying the wonders of CAT scans and NMR technologies. These images provide impressive views of the brain's anatomy, but none offers even a glimpse of hew the brain thinks - how it shuttles information from place to place. “What we would really like to know,” - said Henri Begleiter, a psychiatrist at the Downstate Medical Center in New York, “is not what the brain is made up of, but what it does.”
