Power/energy: Power for the '30s: A challenge for Western Europe: There is a way for Europe to make itself energy-independent. But is there a will?

Meeting Western Europe's power needs through the year 2000 will require new technology, a high level of international cooperation, and extensive application of mature technology. The new technology will be primarily nuclear, with emphasis on fast breeder reactors. International cooperation will be needed both in developing commercially feasible breeder reactors and in distributing the additional electricity that will become available. As for mature technology, further advances may be expected in such fields as pumped water storage.
