Consumer electronics: Stereophonic sound for television: Three transmission systems, vying for selection as the U.S. standard, are compared

In many parts of Japan and West Germany, a television viewer hears stereo sound while watching a program. In the United States, by contrast, a viewer hears monophonic sound. But soon, possibly by late 1983, TV broadcasters in the United States will begin transmitting stereo sound for the audio portion of selected TV programs. This sound will have quality comparable to that now transmitted by FM radio stations. But first, stereo-TV transmission standards must be set.
