Manpower trends: Tomorrow's EE: The engineer of the future may well be an M.S., a Ms., black, or a combination of all three

Engineering education in the United States is changing, and the changes it is undergoing will have significant and long-lasting effects on the engineering profession and on the types of service it will provide to society in the years ahead. The past four years have seen a sharp decline in engineering enrollments (which only now are beginning to level off), a growing movement to recruit more women and minority students into the profession, and a growth in programs t o train engineering technologists. These changes mean, of course, an increase in the number of people receiving an engineering education, but beyond that they reflect a change in philosophy and in the type of education being offered. They promise to be as significant to the future of engineering in the U.S. as was the post-World War II shift from a technologically oriented engineering curriculum to one emphasizing the physical and mathematical sciences.
