Effect of transmission time distribution on the multihop packet radio network performance

A simulation study of a 40-node mesh-connected multihop packet radio network (PRNET) operating in the CSMA (carrier sense multiple access) and CSMA/CD (collision detection) schemes is presented. The packet arrival process is Poisson and each node with a packet transmits with probability pi (/spl pi/). A maximum input throughput of 0.4 is achieved with moderate network traffic, with both schemes. A study of transmission time distribution shows that the exponential distribution gives the poorest performance, while the uniform distribution gives the best performance. For moderate traffic and increasing propagation delay, CSMA/CD is superior to the CSMA scheme.
