Experience and issues using transit priority traffic control systems

Summary form only given, as follows. The Canadian Urban Transit Association has sponsored research in an effort to encourage transit staff and traffic engineers to consider a more widespread use of systems that will provide priority to transit vehicles in street traffic, and thereby improve travel times and service reliability. The study explored existing literature, and examined actual experience with such systems in a number of case sites, in particular in Europe where experience is more prevalent. Some of the key findings of this research are summarized, and some of the issues that will need to be addressed to ensure a more widespread use of this technology in North America are discussed.
