Electromechanical actuation

Linear electromechanical actuation as its name suggests utilises electrical and mechanical components to provide linear movement. This linear movement can be used as part of a process to apply a load or position and provide support for a mass. There are several parameters which the actuator may be specified to control as part of this process - position, load, linear speed, and acceleration. The controllability of the actuation system depends upon the characteristics of its individual components and the interfaces between them. It is therefore important to understand each of the components limitations. Such a system can be divided into three distinct areas: the leadscrew converts rotary motion into linear movement and applies the load; the mechanical drive gives mechanical advantage; and the electrical drive provides rotary motion. Often transducers are fitted between the electrical control system and the other components to monitor important characteristics.
