Thin metamaterials as antireflection coating

We show that structuring of metallic surfaces having dimensions of tens of nanometers can form metamaterials that strongly absorb incident light. The explanation lies in damping the plasmon surface wave and the absorption can manifest itself in a large interval of angles of incidence. Structures with two-dimensional periodicity can strongly absorb unpolarized light in a given wavelength interval.
