Stretching the McDonnell Douglas software training budget: striking a balance between in-house and outsourcing

McDonnell Douglas Aerospace-in the light of downsizing, streamlining, and consolidation-has taken an innovative approach to software process education. This paper describes the approaches taken over a period of four years, the changes to those approaches, and the ultimate decisions which were implemented, culminating in a true balance between in-house developed training and collaborative outsourcing. Also described is the outcome based upon customer/student responses and use, budgetary savings, and decisions made as a result of the partnering efforts undertaken with the California State University at Long Beach.
