Text referencing within computer-based tutorials

Describes a set of tutorials designed to prepare undergraduate students before they enter a laboratory and carry out an experiment. Without such tutorials, students rarely do such preparation and thus inefficiently use the laboratory and its support staff. The authors have taken a pragmatic approach to the design of these tutorials and based them on the needs of the student and have exploited their own skills at presenting difficult information in a palatable form. The tutorial provides direct access to the course text which is presented in the same way as the paper-based book, with 49 online for example, being the same as page 49 in the real book. The organisational familiarity gained with either the paper-based book or the electronic book readily transfers from one to the other.
