FDTD Modeling of electromagnetic cloaks

Metamaterials have the potential to control and manipulate the wave propagation in a manner that eludes the conventional materials, because of their periodic nature that can either be small-scale or resonant. Their use may enable us to create highly directional antennas, enhance the performance of small antennas by making them appear as though the electrical lengths were much larger, and design highly integrated transceiver systems that can be packaged in a limited space. Although the practical applications of metamaterials are currently limited by their loss characteristics and operational bandwidths, it is very important to develop efficient modeling tools to quantify and represent the characteristics of metamaterials and their behaviour, especially when they form an integral part of complex electromagnetic systems.
