Magnetic Characteristics in Atomically Order-Disordered Ni3Fe Alloys

To investigate the magnetic properties of Ni-Fe system alloys in varying states of atomic disorder, samples with compositions near that of Ni
3
Fe were either cooled slowly or were quenched from various temperatures, and the maximum permeability in the [111], [110], and [100] directions measured. The results for fully ordered samples and samples quenched from 560°C in all three directions, and for the permeability in the [111] direction as a function of annealing temperature, are presented. For all compositions, but particularly that at 80% Ni, the permeability is highest in samples quenched from around 600°C.
