The effect of emittance inhomogeneous broadening on the brightness of a magnetic undulator

In this paper we discuss the degradation of the undulator brightness induced by the spatial and angular distributions of the e-beam. The obtained results are general in the sense that they hold regardless of any matching condition. The relevance of the analysis to free-electron laser dynamics is also commented upon.<
