Holmium-YAG lasers expand surgical scope

The surgical applications of the pulsed Ho:YAG laser are discussed. The laser operates at a wavelength that is absorbed by water so that its effect on tissue is localized and thermal damage to surrounding tissue is minimized. Because the water in tissue absorbs laser energy, the laser has a consistent effect regardless of tissue color. Its wavelength (2.10 microns) is highly transmitted by optical fibers, and the fiber delivery system significantly enhances the laser's applicability in surgery. The laser construction and beam delivery method are described.<
