A two layer fiber network for broadband integrated services

Several alternative forms of a new optical fiber network for broadband integrated services are described that should relieve the congestion that a large number of video channels may produce with the present plan for residential broadband integrated digital network (B-ISDN) service. One of the alternative forms uses a hybrid analog and digital network called broadband integrated services hybrid network (B-ISHN). It will deliver the broadcast NTSC (National Television System Committee) TV channels onto a second layer that is on a second fiber or on the same fiber but at a different wavelength. An alternative switched digital overlay is described that could utilize a photonic switch architecture. This photonic switch architecture is based on a merger of code division and wavelength division or space and wavelength division multiplexing.<
