Experimental study of harmonic-flux effects in ferromagnetic materials

It is shown that the third-harmonic flux, at zero phase angle with respect to the fundamental flux, can reduce both excitation current and core loss significantly below that with fundamental flux alone under saturated conditions for core materials in which losses are dominated by hysteresis losses. Experimental results also show that the third-harmonic fluxes often occur naturally. They can be preserved when passive filters or externally applied, third-harmonic power sources are used. A three-phase transformer consisting of three single transformers is used as an example to show the potential for reducing the losses and otherwise improving the performance of power apparatus.<
