Offshore oceanographic applications for battery-powered, high-end microprocessors

A commercial, single-board computer featuring the all-static CMOS 80C88 microprocessor provides a powerful building block for battery-powered, unmanned oceanographic systems. Three different oceanic applications are described which have substantially benefited from this powerful tool: the Loran repeater buoy; an updated offshore sea-air environmental monitoring station; and a smart plankton net.<
