Engineering education and the liberal arts tradition

After a review of the history of electrical engineering education in the US, the author argues that the concept of a liberal education is not completely outmoded, not only in the undergraduate professional schools, but also in the arts and sciences. However, obtaining such an education today is considered very difficult. The author explains why he believes all educated people in the US today should be fluent in at least two 'languages': English and calculus. He maintains that all undergraduate students must also, whether they are majoring in liberal arts or sciences, develop an appreciation for technology.<
