Radiation-induced conductivity and charge storage in irradiated dielectrics

Summary form only given. A theory of radiation-induced conductivity and space-charge build-up in disordered dielectrics under continuous irradiation with charged particles or gamma-rays is developed for arbitrary spatial distributions of carrier generation and charge deposition rates. Open-circuit conditions are analyzed with one electrode (either rear or front) grounded. Analytical solutions for the spatial distributions of the carrier densities and the time-dependent electric field have been obtained. It is shown that, if the rear electrode is grounded (mode A), the space-charge build-up takes place mostly in the nonirradiated region, and the total charge increases linearly with time. For the front electrode grounded (mode B), there is only relatively weak charging in the irradiated region. Consequently a dielectric is much less charged for mode B than for mode A.<
