Harmonisation of frequency allocation for communications in search and rescue

The author explains the need for search and rescue (SAR) organisation, and describes the global maritime distress and safety system (GMDSS). SAR functions in the GMDSS are described, and frequencies for SAR use in the GMDSS are discussed, in particular those for on-scene communications. Communication between rescue coordination centres is outlined.<
