Living with complexity (in railway software engineering)

In this paper, the author argues that there are no reasons why the railway industry should be different from other industries with respect to its attitude to software engineering. For some years (perhaps about five) almost every new large railway control project has been applying structured techniques, mainly because of earlier disasters with other software methods. The author shows that we are now beginning to see them applied to smaller developments (with one or two software engineers) with good results. Whereas three years ago, one saw little evidence of these techniques, the author highlights how we are now beginning to see them being taken up by the railway industry.<
